ORIGINAL OGNYAN CHITAKOV ARTWORK!
2024, "Askia" - stone sculpture
This original basalt sculpture is one of the latest artworks of the skillful Bulgarian contemporary professional sculptor Ognyan Chitakov, presenting an unique contemporary look and skills at carving fine art portraiture, deeply inspired by postmodernism, naturalism and realism. In crafting this sculpture, he has hewn raw basalt into a visage that merges the ruggedness of nature with the nuanced expressions of humanity. The sculptor has captured an interplay of light and shadow, where the stony textures and contours evoke resilience and contemplation. This piece speaks to the indomitable spirit that perseveres through adversity, an emotional anchor to any space imbuing strength, beauty and reflection.
Askia Muhammad I (1443–1538) was the first ruler of the Askia dynasty of the Songhai Empire. He is also known as Askia the Great, and his name in modern Songhai is Mamar Kassey. Askia strengthened his empire and made it the largest empire in West Africa's history. His policies resulted in a rapid expansion of trade with Europe and Asia and the creation of many schools.
