Margo Rose’s “Cosmos” series of canvasses attempt to develop a direct aesthetic and tactile connection between the viewer and subject, using a literality which reimagines the subject (some distant moon or star) as the canvas itself. Rose pushes the boundaries of colour and canvas by mixing elements of sculpture, with holographic and metallic pigments to create a rich mosaic of materials in a nod towards the richness of the untouched worlds she evokes. Many of these abstracted spaces take cues from the highly visual realm of science fiction, using elements of magical realism to convey the cosmic geography of the text as the canvas itself. By bringing the cosmos into the domestic space, Rose hopes to build a bridge between her audience and the cosmos that they are both a part of, and separate from.
