This is a hand carved, hand printed linocut print of the Winterstoke Sun Shelter in Ramsgate, UK, known to us as The Monkey Shelter as children.
The shelter and gardens were designed by the architects Sir John Burnet & Partners, and constructed by Pulham and Son. The main feature of the gardens, is a semi-circular shaped colonnade carved into the pulhamite (fake concrete rock) recess. Inside the shelter, and now lost, were two pieces of sculpture work by Mr. Gilbert Bayes. They represented children playing with the "Ram" of Ramsgate. On the upper terrace, approached by broad flights of steps, the gardens proper are reached. In the centre, and immediately over the shelter, is a circular pool enclosed on the north side by a semi-circular Roman seat.
I captured the scene in a moment in time. The graffiti was recently cleaned off by a local volunteer group.
This print is printed in four colours and was printed in reduction, whereby some of the lino is carved away between each colour layer. This means that no more can be printed, making these prints collectible.
This print, in a run of just 12, was made using the finest quality materials including archival acid-free printmaking paper and bright glossy linseed ink and my editions are signed and numbered at the base of the print. As each of these prints is hand pressed there will be some very slight variation between them.
This print, given its size, will be mailed wrapped in tissue in a sturdy cardboard postal tube.
