The artwork depicts a Japan’s monkey proudly sitting on monastery shrine. The name and the image itself was inspired by the story of these monkeys. When the Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 6th century it brought with the stories and lore surrounding monkeys. Simians were believed to be protectors and messengers of the gods, so they are carved monkeys holding up the beams at many Japanese shrines. Unfortunately, hundred years later, the attitude towards monkeys had dramatically changed and this work was born to remember people how beautiful the wildlife is and any creature shouldn’t be treated badly.
“Monkey god” is a unique painting created with watercolours on professional 100% cotton Khadi handmade watercolour paper. It measures 38.5 x 57.5 cm and ships ready for framing.
