‘Mind the Gap 3’ is part of a body of work in which I explore the London Underground, taking snapshots of the ordinary and transforming them using new perspectives. Here, I have chosen to use acrylic: a fast medium which forces me to react and make decisions quickly. I have selected a muted palette to help to conjure the heavy atmosphere of these subterranean tunnels and the rugged, well-trodden surfaces paying silent witness to millions of travellers’ feet.
The focus of this image is not an object but an absence: the gap. The physical divide so casually stepped over echos the psychological and temporal chasms which enable so many bodies to survive in muted coexistence.
