As many of us know, migraines often come in clusters. During a recent cluster, the idea to paint what migraines feel like literally hit me between the eyes, so to speak. I knew, immediately, that I had to use fluorescent colors to express the intensity of migraine experiences. When I was well enough to work, I printed out text blocks describing the migraine experience: symptoms, phases, triggers, et c., which I collaged onto a canvas. I then created a network or web, which was painted in fluorescent pink, orange, yellow & lime green, to mimic the neural network in the brain, which literally lights up during a migraine attack. I’m sure that many of us who suffer with migraines will recognize our experiences—expressed in visual terms—in this painting. The painting has been given a satin varnish for protection, and hanging hardware is already installed.
