“Melkinthorpe Pond 2” is an acrylic on canvas painting 100cmsWx70cmsHx3cmsD. The painting is inspired by a lily pond in Melkinthorpe, a small hamlet in North Cumbria U.K. The photographs I used to make the drawings and painting were taken quickly on a damp, drizzly autumn afternoon in 2019. The pond is surrounded by colourful autumnal shrubbery which frames the water lily pond. My viewpoint looks across the waters and attempts to capture the colour and light reflections on a rainy afternoon. There is no intention to replicate the subject in illustrative detail. The intention is to portray overall visual effects and atmosphere instead of details, and to achieve an effect of intense colour vibration. I continue to take inspiration from colourists such as Gillian Ayres, John Hoyland and Barbara Rae and I continue to reference the Impressionists and Fauvists. The painting is shipped in a robust custom made cardboard crate (same as those used to transport large screens). The painting is bubble wrapped to protect the canvas. Further wrapping is made with corrugated card. A wooden frame is placed inside the cardboard crate to preserve the structural strength of the packaging. Each painting is insured to its sale value.
