In Greek mythology, Medusa was a female monster, who turned to stone those who looked into her eyes. She was beheaded by Perseus, who later used his head as a weapon until he gave it to the goddess Athena to put her on his shield, the aegis. Since classical antiquity, the image of the head of Medusa is represented in the device that drives away evil known as Gorgoneion.
