We went out to see these some years ago, so this from one of my own photographs. I have painted them once before only from a different angle.
They were part of part of our WW2 defences and commanded the entrance to the river Thames. They would have deferred enemy aircraft from using the river as navigation into central London. Later they were used as pirate radio stations and since then they have just stood there rusting slowly
Amazingly they are still there. One collapsed after a ship collided with it, but that is all.
Wonderful trip out from London on a paddle steamer. Very atmospheric when we got there. Everyone stopped talking. It was quite eerie
