Martyr looks at sacrifice both forced and willingly given. In it the two figures desperately show their wounded palms to receive blessing and conformation that they have done right and that as a result their suffering will soon be over. The distant figure is in control of the younger figure holding him to his own ignorance. He blocks the true hallow of enlightenment and knowledge with his sacred scars to protect his own shattered hallow. The child is forced to wear a crown of thorns representing the torment of ignorance.
