Maritime is a strange painting about the relationship between (two) persons or between sea and land. The action takes place at the shore - a border area where the interaction between these two elements takes place. We see a seaman in a boat approaching the shore and holding a burning flag (desire). The flag corresponds to the cadmium red tree that expresses a vertical movement that wants to connect the sky and earth, up and down. A larger part of the earth (the base on which one steps) is dark which means it is still unconscious... or burned by desire. The black color corresponds with that of the tricorne. And the yellow part of the land (already intuitively perceived) finds its complement in the yellow tower-like hat of the person that stands to the left.
