We tried to grow basil and salad greens in our small garden in the Bronx, but were plagued by slugs. A kind friend suggested putting beer in jar tops in the garden near those plants. The beer was imbibed by someone [squirrels perhaps] but not the slugs, who continued to dine on our veggies. A more knowledgeable friend told me that a border of Marigolds in the area would send off vapors that would discover the slugs. That looked attractive and also worked. The slugs departed, the vegetables flourished, likewise the flowers. So, I've always had a warm spot in my heart for marigolds...
