An ostrich feather in her hand, a queen dressed almost like anyone else: this is Marie-Antoinette, the sixth work in the En Majesté series, portraying the Queen of France who reigned through revolution and died beheaded, painted here as she once asked to be painted.
She wears simple undress rather than court dress, echoing the way she wanted Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, her favourite painter, to show her, informal, close, almost private. The feather was one of her favourite ornaments in life, an object of pour fashion rather than power, and it becomes here the only trace of royalty left in the frame.
Between the queen the history books remember and the woman who simply wanted a portrait that looked like herself, the painting holds both at once, intimacy and downfall sharing the same canvas.
