Original artwork description:

This painting was commissioned for Maria's 100th birthday. The reference was a photo taken in 1944.

Working from the original black and white photo created a unique challenge; the original image was combined with several colour reference photos to accurately recreate Maria's skin tone.

The intense light on the left was darkened as it was contrary to the sense of turn of form; this also allowed more space for the lights in the centre of the portrait, aiding three-dimensionality.

Commissioned still life reminiscent of the lavish still-life's of 16th century Dutch and Flemish masters, this commissioned work is centred around the Shakespeare gin accompanied with the client's favourite botanicals. The texture folds of the table cloth in the foreground increase the contrast, adding to the overall sense of depth.
