Original artwork description:

Maria Bradford, depicted in this ballpoint pen portrait, is a trailblazing Sierra Leonean chef, author and cultural ambassador of Sierra Leone’s rich culinary traditions. This work forms part of an ongoing series of works looking to celebrate pioneering living Sierra Leoneans, whom I believe should be celebrated more.
The vibrant background, created with coloured felt pens, features intricate geometric and floral motifs inspired by Sierra Leonean textiles. These elements represent resilience, creativity, and pride in our roots. As an artist also of Sierra Leone heritage, I deeply resonate with Maria’s mission to redefine narratives and bring the richness of our culture to the western world.

From founding ‘Shwen Shwen’ to publishing the acclaimed ‘Sweet Salone’, Maria has not only amplified Sierra Leone’s voice in the culinary world but also redefined how we celebrate heritage. Through this artwork, I pay homage to a beacon of inspiration within the Sierra Leonean diaspora.
