The Maracanã Stadium is not just a stadium, it is the place where an entire people took flying lessons.
When it was inaugurated in 1950 for the World Cup, it had not yet been completed, but despite this, more than 200,000 people entered the spaceship that had in its very name the origin of its lightness.
In 2011, before the many renovations that made it look more and more like any other stadium in the world, the Maracanã, with its wonderful architecture, bore witness to a glorious history.
Imagine being at the foot of the favelas, in the early 2000s, inside the temple of world football, with a crowd cheering on their team as if it were the last game in history: Fluminence versus National.
As I was increasingly attracted by this crowd and this monument that looked like a spaceship ready to take off at any moment, I jumped out of my seat and started to turn, go up and up again.
The spectacle that presented itself to my eyes was something crazy: hundreds of thousands of people all around, behind the stadium, as if to remind us that we were on earth and not in the sky, the mountains dotted with huts and above us thick clouds of rain.
The scene was too big for any lens, so I pointed all the way to the left of the stadium, turned the camera vertically and started shooting... one... two... three... four... and at some point it happened, GOAL!!!.... as I kept shooting I saw half the stadium screaming and jumping into the stands for a goal that seemed to have arrived there just to be remembered.
Here is the story of this shot. A shot that has remained in the drawer for more than 13 years and that now, for a special occasion, I have decided to print and put on sale in a limited edition of 25.
