As I stood on the banks of the Hudson River, gazing at Manhattan awakening under the morning light, I was captivated by the transformation of the cityscape. I wanted to capture that moment in this painting—the golden sunlight piercing through the towering skyscrapers, casting a warm glow over the steel and glass, while the water mirrored a vibrant symphony of colors.
For the composition, I used a slightly exaggerated perspective to enhance the grandeur of the skyline. I emphasized the silhouettes of the buildings, making them stand out dramatically against the interplay of light and shadow. The contrast between warm and cool tones was essential: the left side of the city bathes in fiery sunlight, while the right side remains cloaked in cool blue hues, creating a striking visual balance.
In terms of technique, I applied thick, expressive brushstrokes to convey depth and texture. The reflections on the water were painted with loose, gestural strokes to mimic the shimmering movement of light on the surface. I deliberately used a dominant warm palette, infusing the painting with energy and warmth, as if the city itself were coming alive with the sunrise.
This painting is not just a depiction of the New York skyline but a tribute to time, light, and the vitality of the city. I hope viewers can feel the awe and poetry of that moment, as if standing beside me at the river’s edge, witnessing Manhattan’s awakening.
