A densely psychological landscape of the mind permeates the narrative of this painting as we're taken inside the head of the woman/girl embodied by the work's main figure. Naked, and contemplating her sexuality in an attitude that's equal parts fascination and pleasure, the viewer and the other two figures are excluded from this sensual study of arousal. With her disregard for outside influence, we're left to decipher in vain the complex whir of relationships felt or imagined in the woman's psyche, with the exception of her deeply focused display of self-fascination. The smallish doll-like figure hovering off in the distance might be her younger, innocent self walking home from school, or a protective apparition silently imploring her to turn her gaze away from herself in order to focus on more timely pursuits. "It's alright," the self-absorbed woman seems to be saying to the nagging outside clamor, "you can all go away. Mama's got this."
Influences, among others, include Max Beckmann, Edvard Munch, Bob Thompson, George McNeil, Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Francesco Clemente, R.B. Kitaj and Willem de Kooning.
