Artwork description:

The zinc etching of Maid is hand painted using tempera. It portrays a model who posed for sketches in 1995, now drawn on a zinc plate using the crosshatch technique.

Tempera has been added layer by layer, gradually washing back each layer before adding the next, deepening each of the colours, adding a sepia tone sensibility, whilst also utilising the worms-eye view composition, rather than the usual viewpoint of looking down upon or directly across from the model - shifting the usual focus found in paintings of models.

The print/ painting has been continually worked and carefully erased using water and brushes, gradually lifting off some of the printed line and colour, adding an entropic sensibility that shimmers and explores a weathering process in the image, as though it shimmers parts of a memory: one that is gradually becoming erased over time, adding a particular aesthetic to the overall image.

Framed in an antique white mount frame with backing board in a sealed protective polybag.

Materials used:

Zinc Etching, Tempera, Black Printing Ink, Rosapina Fabriano
