Original artwork description:

S(PA)RROW or The Sorrow series explores my own emotions and vulnerability of where I stand in this world. These symbolic paintings represent my state of mentality, what I am learning, letting go, or digging up. The Sparrow is personified, the flowers and plants tell the story, and the glimpse of Gold is hope. In a sense, I am recreating life on raw canvas by telling personal yet relatable stories about my journey within it.

Each piece is purposely painted on the raw side of the canvas. As making ground for plants to grow and flowers to bloom, I find this process the same. First I stain the canvas and apply the gesso to build a foundation, the colours are then carefully added to the ground, and finally, extra details of gold leaf and thread are used to complete the story.

I heavily rely on symbolism in my forms of expression. Starting from the foundations of a raw canvas, the carefully chosen images, colours, and cotton threads are symbols of life, and how everything has to be built from nothing. Even the cotton threads are hand-dyed and meticulously stitched into place with purpose, and at times, chaos.

Materials used:

Acrylic paint, Cotton thread, Gold leaf
