Original artwork of the city of Luxembourg painted on canvas stretched on double wooden bars.
I have visited Luxembourg City twice in my life and was always fascinated by its beautiful location among the lush, green mountains. Needless to say, that I decided to pick the color green to represent this city. It took me two weeks to research the history of this city and decided that I had to include some of its history in the painting.
Read below to find out the details of this painting:
In the center of the painting you can see the Ducal palace. Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy and thus the Duke and his former residence one of the main landmarks. The sculpture of Duchess Charlotte stands in front of the palace. To the right the Luxembourg City Hall is visible and above it the tower of the historical building of the Luxembourg bank, representing the city as a center of finance. On the top of the bank sits the city palace Cercle Cité.
On the left side the old cathedral Notre-Dame is visible. Between its towers the UNESCO World Heritage Site Fort Thüngen balances on a rope.
On the bottom left a rose is integrated into the background. It is the national flower of Luxembourg. The background in the center shows the viaduct and the slogan of the Luxembourg people „Mir wëlle bleiwe wat mir sinn“ (We want to stay the way we are.)
The main element of the painting is the Adolphe Bridge in the center. A tug of war is taking place between a baguette, a cheese, a sausage and a Sacher cake. Each type of food represents a country. Baguette – France, cheese – Netherlands, sausage – Germany and Sacher cake for Austria. Each of these countries have taken over Luxembourg at one time in history. They have fought constantly over this little country. Despite all the foreign attacks Luxembourg has maintained its identity. The „Gëlle Frau,“ a memorial to remember the victims of the wars towers above the fighting countries. She holds the flag of the EU as a symbol for peace in Luxembourg.
