As much as I love Monet's Waterlilies, I wanted to create something quite different - a decorative microcosm intricately executed with vibrant psychedelic detail. My use of colour is unconventional, i.e. - not much in the way of the usual sort of green, but turquoises and teals with contrasting hues of crimson, vermilion and orange.
Veins in leaves and exploration of colour and texture in plants have always fascinated me, and waterlilies are among some of my favourite plants. I am inspired by the form of each leaf - the way in which they fold or lie flat, how the light filters through the lattice-like veins in a prismatic array of colour, and how, (like emerald islets), grow in clusters of varying heights receding into the distance across lakes and ponds. The cool tranquility of the water is a soothing balm and the reflections created by the leaves are in itself part of the organic structure.
