This regal whippet was named Josh. He did not belong to me but to an aquaintance and I was so moved by his photograph that I asked to paint him. There was a nobility about him, an unspoken intelligence and grace which I felt needed to be preserved. Josh died last year, leaving a hole in his owner's life hence the title I have chosen for this painting.
I set out to paint Josh in monochrome but ended up adding soft hues to the roses behind him and as the work evolved I steered the look towards that of an old black and white photograph which has been hand tinted. Love for a great dog is after all, timeless.
