When I was a younger artist, I never really thought about branding or identity...my ego sustained me and didn't feel I needed to let anyone know...they should just KNOW. But, as time goes by and the hair gets grayer and life gets calmer and focused, identity seems to be slipping into the fray more than often. I suspect I am at the age where all the reflections on life start happening, and the horrible rumination on legacy/immortality. The latter I abhor and do not like to think about because it sullies the present and the moment. Alas, it creeps in.
Painting astronauts is nothing but a joy for me. This marvel of equipment, courage, mystery, and a small number of humans who have actually been an astronaut makes it even more glorious. I am drawn to the image because it literally could be anything or anyone in that suit. Be it our species, or an alien species, it just doesn't matter. When you are in space, it all seems pretty insignificant to anchor on a self-proclaimed definition of who you are, when that doesn't even register on a cosmic scale.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for self-reflection and knowing thyself, but it seems to get us, as a species, in a heap of trouble, and in a pool of confusion and existential quandaries. So for now, I use astronauts, skulls, objects to homogenize all aspects of our species, with no particular adherence, logic, or politic, just aesthetic awesomeness.
