Several years ago, I was wandering around various northern Italian cities. I was looking at galleries, churches, grand buildings and anything that caught my eye, with no particular idea of where I was. I sketched this shadowed colonnade, somewhere in the centre of Verona. I found the sketch recently and decided to work it up into a painting. The sepia, almost monochromatic quality reflects the quality of the fading memory, as well as the 'bleaching' nature of the harsh Italian summer sun.
The painting is framed with a simple black wooden moulding.
Highest quality artists' oil paint on heavy Italian linen canvas.
