Original artwork description:

This sculpture suggests a figure in limbo or suspended animation, like a nomad belonging to neither the past nor future but rather existing in a fluid state.

The binding the figure creates a series of radiating lines that describe the contours of the figure and also animates the surface in a manner akin to the act of throwing a stone into water and watching the radiating rings it produces. The tight binding also implies a kind of contained energy or potential similar to that of a coiled spring. The exterior of the figure might be thought of as a protective shield but also as a skin to be shed, or a cocoon that conceals a potential for transformation.
The creation of each sculpture involves a number of processes; each figure starts as a solid clay model built around an armature, once the clay is leather hard the figure is cut out from the armature, hollowed out, and fixed back together for firing. The fired work is then bound with fabric cord and treated with a copper/iron resin mix which is treated to produce a particular patination.

Materials used:

ceramic, iron, resin
