This painting is based on the original photograph 'White-crowned Sparrow', by Cindy Treger, whose express consent has been requested to use it as a reference.
The White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) is a species of passerine bird native to and very widespread in North America. This medium-sized songbird, when adult, has two characteristic black and white stripes along his crowned head, with gray chest and belly, white bands on its wing and a long tail. The more northern populations have a pinkish to orange-pink bill. Two curious details about these cute birds are the number of local song dialects that can be distinguished within the species, and their natural alertness mechanism, that allows them to stay awake for as long as two weeks during migration periods.
