In this piece of work I have layered the background of the canvas with a variety of found materials, over which I have scored the surface with marks using a pencil. At this stage the bottles are just in outline. I then scumble over the background area with a light white emulsion whilst being conscious of how the materials and textures are showing through the paint. Sometimes I will use a palette knife to reveal some of the otherwise hidden and more interesting texture details which occur, seemingly, naturally.
Following this part of the process I will then concentrate on rendering, through the use of a more controlled collage technique, the bottles. Here I use strips of paper and fabric. I try to vary the application of the materials within the bottle shape so that they are entirely individual despite the same process being used.
The texture and the simplicity of the shapes are all important to me.
