Couples, lounging together, generally around food, has been a mainstay in my Work for many years. Impressed and inspired by Picasso's many couples portrayed seated at a Cafe Table, gangly elbows emphasized planted squarely on the Tabletop before them. Picasso's figures were typically depicted in an attitude of depression; down and out folks; hollow cheeked, with blank stares. While many of my couples have been depicted as typically Parisian ( with attitudes Tres Blasé) they are generally dressed up, and often sporting fanciful hats.... The co- mingling of arms and hands, is a standard detail of my couples I suppose implying intimacy of sorts.
Botero's work has often inspired more rotund couples, lolling about on the ground with a picnic of goodies and wine spread before them. (One detail that separates my Picnicing couples from Botero's is that mine are generally, still awake, and some wine is still in the bottle!) It was only several years ago living and working in my Galerie in Collioure, that I realized comparisons to Botero were made frequently.
This couple is a sort of Melange of the two types of images; a couple seated at a table, yet taking their treats out of doors. The coming on of Fall, always seems to encourage me to speak about it in images. So... There we have it...
This piece is finished around the edges of the canvas, so that it can be hung, unframed.
