Leopold de Montblanc is a funny sculpture of a round noble cat with a surprised, some would say timid, face. His real name is Léon de Montblanc - just look at the tip of his tail!
He's part of the CalbinoOz family, sculptures made from natural calabash grown in France.
This calabash has been emptied of its contents, seeds and skin, so that it can be exported all over the world to countries that strictly protect biodiversity and do not accept any seeds, and then refilled, this time with clay balls and recycled cardboard shavings to make it heavier and more stable.
Like many CalbinoOz sculptures, Leopold wears a small turtleneck jumper, his in a very pale faded blue, made from modelled, dried and then painted surfine wood cellulose. His trousers were painted with a dry brush using three dabbed coats to give a baked pottery effect, while the whole ensemble was then protected with marine varnish. Her luminous eyes are made of blown glass.
Signed under the buttocks.
Materials: dried empty calabash wood, surfine wood cellulose, clay beads, blown glass, acrylic paint and water-soluble oil, protective varnish.
Approx. dimensions: H25 x W16 x D25 cm
calabash wood, surfine wood cellulose, blown glass, gourd wood, feather rachis
