Original artwork description:

This series of mini artworks was originally conceived as a limited run for a pop-up event at the A Plus A Gallery during the opening week of the 2015 Venice Biennale.

However, because of the positive response to the work, and because they've been fun to work on, I've decided to continue and expand the series for a little longer. I also like the fact that they offer a fun and affordable way of collecting small but original pieces from my body of work, without having to pay the £2000-£20000 price tag that my larger pieces fetch in the galleries.

Whereas the original series of mini artworks were predominantly executed in ink, pencil and acrylic, and based upon my previous sketchbook work, these new ones are done in oil paint (marking my return to the medium after a twenty year break from it) and are all painted directly to the primed surface without any preliminary sketches or reference to earlier sketchbook work. This experimental way of working is proving invaluable to my current artistic development, and is also throwing up ideas, forms and techniques that I am starting to employ in my larger oil paintings.

The majority of the paintings and drawings in this series are executed on 20 x 15 cm blocks (some pieces vary in size so check the individual artwork listings for exact sizes) of 1.8 cm thick plywood, and designed to hang unframed, as wall plaques.

Materials used:

oil paint on plywood substrate
