Callanish is Scotland’s equivalent of Stonehenge but not as well known. Located on the Isle of Lewis, a large island off the North West Scottish coast. It’s a haunting slender central monolith surrounded by a complex of stones perched on an elevated promontory. The site dates back 5,000 years and its provenance remains uncertain, though most likely was connected with the influence of the moon.
One historical theory about its purpose is that it was a lunar observatory. Another theory is that it was an ancient burial ground.
But one of the most fascinating legends is by a man named John Morisone who claimed the stones were once people who ended up as rocks after a witch cast a spell on them.
Whatever the true facts, the mystery and setting of the stones have intrigued visitors for eons.
