Artwork description:

This particular leading lady was the carved figurehead at the prow of the Royal Navy ship HMS Caliope, launched in 1884. The tradition of carved figureheads goes back thousands of years. Their supernatural association is undefined. To my eye these icons are designed to embody and fire the spirit of the beholder. Such expressions have been largely stamped out by the cold and anxious mores of this century.

This print is made from high quality materials and should present no keeping difficulty. The print is pulled from a relief plate cut from rubber, a method similar to lino-printing. The print run produced an edition of six copies.

Materials used:

oil-based printing ink, Johannot paper
