The Jardin de Kathim is a hilltop garden crowned by a large banyan tree in the capital city of the Republic of the Wards, a fictional land with a fictional but completely developed language, the Wardwesân, created by French writer Frédéric Werst and published in the two volumes of anthologies of writings entitled WARD (Éditions du Seuil).
The extravagant banyan tree with its baroque roots like a network of links into unknown mysteries is the center of this painting. Taking shade underneath this tree full of mysteries are different figures, a Zouave, a sunbather sitting in a chair, an enigmatic character standing on one of the branches of the giant tree, and a woman holding a large canvas bag with a puppy inside. Four adult dogs are also enjoying the coolness provided by the tree’s shade on a hot day.
In the distance is Phaz Lake, the largest and most important body of water of the island republic.
