This plein air work was created during a 5-day watercolour painting workshop in Normandy which I participated in with other members of the Belgian watercolour institute. This was the first view which struck me on arrival at Cap Hornu where our hotel was located in a beautiful isolated spot on the Baie de Somme. This broad estuary is an area of exceptional natural beauty and a magnet for artists and photographers alike.
I painted the sky as I saw it that summer morning with a grey haze and a hint of thunderclouds forming on the right but which then later dissipated. The water of the bay really does have that lovely turquoise colour too!
The town of Le Crotoy provides a fascinating skyline and I have included only a few details since it is so far across the bay. This is the second time I have painted the skyline of Le Crotoy, having visited the Baie de Somme once before and painted from a slightly different angle in rather different weather conditions (See the watercolour painting “Baie de Somme”, also available on Artfinder). After this work was completed, I simply had to visit Le Crotoy to see it “close up” and painted a third painting (see “Houses in Le Crotoy”).
