During the years in which he was a "guest" of Minos, Daedalus demonstrated ingenious inventions including a very intricate and complex labyrinth. The inventor was later imprisoned inside his own creation along with his son Icarus. It is said that Minos did this to protect the secrets of that place (which Daedalus obviously knew) or to punish him for having helped Theseus (in league with Ariadne) to kill his monstrous stepson and find the way to escape.
Locked and lost in that labyrinth with no exit, Daedalus thought of creating two pairs of wings with feathers and wax with which to fly away from the labyrinth together with his son. But once in the sky, with his wings welded to his arms and back by the solidified wax and inflamed by the new thrill of flight, Icarus forgot his father's warnings and ended up finding himself too high and close to the sun: the wax melted due to the heat of the star, his wings flaked off and the young man fell to his death.
