My paintings, whether straightforward or not, are always struggling with themselves, attacked by ornate beauty, fitting into figurative forms, formed out of nature and city. The color palate is often arguing with the expressive action and emotion in the painting. There is a thickness to the paint that tempts the viewer with the yearning to touch.
For these paintings I worked on the floor with my canvas because it allows me to be on top of the work and hold it in a way that that adds power behind each scrape or mark that I make. By adding wood ash to the oil paint I am able to scrape and spread it in a satisfying way. However, while adding this texture some of the expressive freedom does escape. That is why you will often find additional markings or drawings in each painting.
