Artwork description:

When I was in Hawai'i in 2017, I read about the Koa‘e‘kea, the White-tailed Tropicbird, which nests inside dormant volcanoes. In 2018, the eruption of in Leilani Estates occurred, with its large lava sprays. About that time, my sister Suzanne Stanton (a long-standing artist) sent me a rubber-stamp collage she did of birds in trees in front of a lava spray. The collage inspired me, so I decided to work the Tropicbirds, burned trees and lava into an image that showed these birds driven from their nests and deciding where to roost. The image features a radial graduated blend (aka split fountain) in the sky for the glow.

This artwork is hand printed from linoleum blocks (plates) and cork sheets on archival printmaking paper, using oil-based inks. The linoleum and blocks and cork sheets are hand cut. Each separate color requires its own block or sheet. 6 colors. Maximum image size: 12" x 9" Overall paper size: 14" x 11"

This edition is limited to 50 copies, and each print is numbered, titled and signed by the artist. Each print is considered an original, and can vary slightly from the others. 2019
