This is the third time I’ve drawn this scene looking down into this alley near my home in Nangang, Taipei City. I like the unique angles and aged colours of the buildings and materials contained in this small scene and wanted to do an oil pastel version of it (the previous versions were Ink and Acrylic). I enjoy using different materials and exploring the different textures and effects that can be discovered. Over the different days I was drawing this picture I noticed people would hang up their laundry to dry, adding new flashes of colour into the scene. I found this interesting and added some of the drying laundry into the picture and so it gained its unexpected name. It’s funny how this often happens, as I’m drawing a scene, different unexpected elements of life appear or happen and become the unforeseen title or focus of the piece.
