This is an original oil painting done from life in the trompe l'oeil tradition.
This is the story of how it came about:
I happened to take a walk around my studio, just to clear my mind and rest my eyes, and there it was, fallen on the ground, this lifeless but beautiful bird. It was a rather busy street, in the middle of town but nobody cared. I immediately checked if it might still be alive, picked it up by one leg and took it to my studio. Upon closer inspection, I realized it must have recently fallen to the ground but it was definitely deceased. I was struck by this bird's beauty straight away, picked it up, arranged it on my studio wall and right away set out to capture the beauty of this little soul. If nothing else, I wanted to honor this little bird’s soul by letting her have her last song through my painting. It was done in oil, on a birch wooden panel (which I luckily had prepared earlier). I used the sight-size method, so the actual size of my painting is life-size. I am a great admirer of trompe l'oeil paintings which are an old branch of the still-life tradition. This painting is the result.
Just as a curiosity, upon researching the name of this bird, Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus), I also discovered that Lucas Cranach the Elder had painted a trompe l'oeil entitled "Two Dead Bohemian Waxwings" in 1530.
I am proud to follow in his steps after centuries, follow the naturalistic tradition. Nature continues to inspire and move me.
I am an artist living and working in Gothenburg, Sweden, alumni of Florence Academy of Art, Sweden.
