Last Light captures that very last drop of summer dusk light on the gloriously mighty sunflower that was growing in my garden, with the last hint of sun glistening the tip of the petals.
Mixing a range of yellows, ‘painting’ the greens, and inking that gorgeous blue-grey shadow, each brought a sense of playfulness to the studio table. I enjoyed inviting that element of the process, especially taking the colours from light to dark and back down again from dark to light - watching how they interact with each other.
Your linocut print is made in the reduction technique. This is a method of block printing where each colour layer is taken from the same block, carving each layer and printing the next colour on top of the last. There are nine layers of subtle vivid colours - the last yellow layer was printed on top of the blue-grey shadow layer to give the undertone of last light. Each layer of colour is mixed using a hint of the previous colour and all from a Payne’s Grey mixed base.
Last Light is lovingly carved on Battleship grey lino, printed with oil based printmaking ink, using an etching press. To reflect the soft edges of the dappled light, I chose to print on Arches 88 paper and utilise its soft yet crisp qualities. Intentional choices are made when selecting the block and paper to print on; each to compliment form and landscape.
Signed and numbered edition of 14.
Your original print will arrive unframed, wrapped in acid free tissue and protected in sturdy packaging during transit.
Paper size: 15 (h) x 15 (w) cm
