Our ancestors celebrated the New Year on September 1st. In the 14th century, the Orthodox Church moved the beginning of the year to September 1st to mark the rest from all everyday worries associated with agricultural work. This custom was adopted from Byzantium. Although the date was shifted to January by the tsar's decree, the residents of Kyiv Podil managed to resist the tsar's decree for another 300 years.

Moreover, they celebrated two holidays - men's and women's. Men decorated a pine tree, and boys were initiated into men. Women decorated a thistle on the City Square. They hung ribbons, beads, apples, and lingonberries on their branches.
Probably, a thistle is a special plant for Kyiv, because many facades of houses in the Art Nouveau style (modern) still have thistle ornaments. Nowadays, few people remember the mysterious properties of thistles, from which they made amulets for travel and protected their homes from evil forces.
