La Vie Est Belle
One week after the terrible and horrific terrorist attack in Nice in 2016 I visited this beautiful city. The atmosphere was tense and emotional. There was a feeling of bewilderment and anger. As I walked down one of Nice’s busy streets full of shops and cafes the clouds opened and seemed to shine a light onto the next street that I would turn down. It is as I entered this street that I saw this scene. A mother and daughter begging. A scene that should not exist in the world today but a scene even more remarkable due to the fact that these two people seemed invisible to everyone. The world passed them by, clients drank coffee and wine in bars across the road almost oblivious to this sadness, shop signs pushed the call to buy to those who needed more. It is this contradiction that I wanted to catch in my painting.
