Street scene, Eglise Notre-Dame-de-Romigier Manosque. La Cogitation - The back of Eglise Notre-Dame-de-Romigier, Manosque, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Our Lady of the Bramble Bush The Church is named after the Black Virgin, a 12th century statue of the virgin and Child made in alder wood. It has been revered by the Manosquins, protector of the city and its inhabitants. By legend the Black Virgin was discovered by a ploughman in the 10th century inside a magnificent ancient sarcophagus, which now serves as the altar. According to tradition, it would have been hidden there to protect it from Saracen invasions. As it was discovered under a bramble bush (roumi, in Provençal), it was nicknamed Our Lady of Romigier. This Black Virgin was especially invoked to protect women in childbirth, to give life to stillborn children and from fatal falls. The painting has a hole in the ground but no Madonna.
