A coral reef (also "rainforest of the sea" because of the very high biodiversity) is a reef structure in the sea formed by hermatypic (reef-building) cnidarians that grows large enough to have a significant physical and ecological influence on its surroundings. They are the largest structures on earth created by living things. The total area of today's coral reefs is 600,000 km²; in the Maldives the reefs rise up to 2200 meters above the sea floor.
