This painting integrates the concepts of realism and decoration in a fantastic, magically real, yet still naturalistic scene where the bird's plumage is rendered in detail with a naturalistic sense, and the glistering golden background produces a luxurious result.
The whirling pattern of dot-to-dot in bold colour transforms it all into a lyrical universe, similar to the decorativeness found in the planar images that Les Nabis used so often to depict not just nature but also a synthesis of metaphors and symbols.
The framing of this piece with a passepartout was chosen to give a classic finish to the artwork. The black passepartout unfolds its full effect as the motif then appears brighter overall. In combination with a golden frame, the black passepartout looks elegant and stylish. I also decided to have the edges of the work visible to give a three-dimensional touch to the scene.
