The story of Jonah might seem simple, at first glance, or even “a whale of a tale,” yet, closer study reveals a depth and density of symbolism and meaning. This is certainly true of Dr. Tim Keller’s book, Rediscovering Jonah: The Secret Mercy of God, which inspired me to create this painting. We see Jonah literally running away from God, which is true of many of us; yet we also see God’s remarkable mercy, which unfolds in His response to the fugitive prophet. Jonah’s timeless message of the need for repentance and the miracle of God’s mercy is just as pertinent today as it was long ago. I have painted this abstract, stormy seascape on a 15” x 30” canvas, to accentuate the depth to which Jonah falls, though--like all of us--he is never beyond the reach of God's love. I painted various pieces of mulberry paper, which were then collaged onto the canvas, along with a passage from the Gospel of Matthew 12: 38. The painting has been given a satin varnish for protection, and hanging hardware is already installed.

Materials used:

Scripture passages, acrylic paint, oil paint, mulberry paper on canvas
