Original artwork description:

This monoprint is part of a small series on the theme of Entomology (study of insects).
It is inspired by the collections of insects in museums, the old wooden cases and drawers where they are all lined up and catalogued for study. These collections return me immediately to a child-like state of wonder.
I find the intricacy of these little creatures, their colours and patterns just so beautiful. Looking at them made me think about patterns in nature and patterns which are man made, like you find on fabrics or china. So my bugs are not copying nature but have more human made patterns on them.

This series is printed onto coloured papers, this one a grey, slightly pearlescent effect heavyweight card (290gsm) made by Fabriano. The pearlescent effect gives it a slightly metallic look. it is lightfast and has high colour stability in addition to being acid free. The card is quite environmentally friendly, produced without wood and using hydro-power.

The images are each made from a unique combination of several linocut blocks inked up and printed and some hand drawn embellishments too.

Each is quite different from the others, the choice of blocks used, the positioning and the colours of the ink make each monoprint a unique creation.

Printed onto Fabriano 290gsm pearlescent grey cardstock (lightfast pigment and acid free), Cranfield gold ink (oil based) and Caligo safe inks.

Paper sized : 50 cm x 70 cm (19.6 inches x 27.5 inches)

My linocuts are handmade from start to finish, hand carved, rolled and handprinted, as in the nature of linoprints and the handmade process they may have small variations. This I feel is part of the charm of printmaking and makes each print into both a unique artwork.
