I'm always trying to find a use for discarded materials that would otherwise go to landfill. This artwork was made entirely from the plastic packaging around tins of baked beans, and recycled plastic bags. I was particularly drawn to some of the graphics on the bags and packaging, reminiscent of Pop art.
I heat-fused pieces of these materials to each-other, making the plastic melt and behave more like paint. By holding the heat source over certain areas for longer than others, parts of the artwork melt and become almost like lace and are almost unrecognisable from their original source, meaning these redundant materials will have a new and longer landfill-free life. I tore some of the heat fused pieces into ribbon-like strips and fused them at the top of the skirt area only to create a 3 dimensional effect.
This artwork is on canvas and framed in a simple white tray frame, ready to hang.
