The Luxembourg Gardens were originally created in 1612 by the widow of King Henry IV of France, and today spans 23 hectares.
I find the light gravelled Parisian park floors reflect so much sunlight that my eyes do not easily adjust for some time, especially if I have just emerged from the darkened metro. By the time I have adjusted, there is a brilliant sense of light and atmosphere, which I wanted to capture in this painting by keeping it high key (light shadows).
It is painted with oil paints on an Italian produced canvas mounted to a wooden board, left to dry for a number of months before being varnished. It is sized 30cm x 20cm (7.8in x 11.8in) and is unframed.
oil paints (Rembrandt, Old Holland, Winsor & Newton, Gamblin, lefranc & bourgeois)
